TrentoDOC - Valle di Cembra
Once famous only for their crisp white wines and Muller Thurgau in particular, the Val di Cembra is one of the major east/west valley that branch off of the Adige valley. Cool with steep slopes, the region is quite stunning with terraced vineyards filling the south facing northern hillside while the southern hillside remain thickly wooded, a source of lumber as well as stone. Dry stone walls that support the terrace here hints at what lays beneath the thin top soils. Layers of porphyritic Andesite, an igneous, volcanic blend primarily made up of silicon dioxide, are not only mined for use in construction and art but also form the basis of the relatively high altitude vineyards of the Valle di Cembra. The resulting soils tend to be rich in minerals, porous, and low in organic material.

Winds play a crucial role in moderating temperatures here as. The Ora winds supplying heat during the late afternoon, while cool winds flowing from the Dolomites coil through the valley each evening. This is the land of elegant, fine, detailed wines but also the source of arguably the most complete and rich base wines for TrentoDOC.
