TrentoDOC- Valle dell'Adige
The largest part of the TrentoDOC is comprised of the Adige valley and surrounding hillside that stretch from Aldeno in the south all the way to the border with the Alto Adige in the north, a distance of some 40 kilometers or 25 miles roughly centered around the city of Trento. The climate through the valley is consistent and while it’s just north of the Vallagarina, it does enjoy a slightly colder, more continental climate, most noticeably as one reaches the northern extension of the zone above the city of Trento.
Map of the Adige Valley in Trentino
The story of the soil throughout the valley is not so consistent. In the southern reaches the composition is similar to that in the Vallagarina, morainic soils on the valley floor with grey calcareous soils and Dolostone in abundance. The city of Trento is surrounded by hills of disparate origin, offering a variety of soil types and affording local growers the opportunity to produce a wide array of base wines. To the north of the city, the geology changes again with distinct differentiation between the sandstones and andesitic lava found on the eastern side of the valley as opposed to the Dolomite and calcareous stones that make up the western walls of the valley. Those western walls are in fact fairly steep cliffs where there is nary a vine to be found.
While less fragmented than the rather chaotic soil composition found in the Valsugana, this extension of the Val d’Adige is not less complex, though the vineyard location are somewhat limited by the steep and abrupt valley walls that rise dramatically from the valley floor.
