April 2023 visit

Oreste Stefano
Non disherbo, few treatments, substantially Cooper sulfate,

2021 Oreste Stefano Langhe Nebbiolo 14%
Only ss, a piece sud ovest, lightly less clay  30 years , 3000 btls, at least above 2500 btls a year

Very perfumed, a bit tight, camphor, sandalwood, lots of black cherry, spice, furry, slightly ferrous, it smells a bit large and veers slightly rustic in a good way. Lots of depth and richness in the mouth, which shows the same fine blend of black cherry fruit, supple, with a good layer of richness, lovely ripe tannins, great integrated acidity, its a bit more powerful and rich than what I am looking for but it delivers a real intense, deep Nebbiolo experience.  Has a nice dusty mineral nuance on the nose. Lovely wine, almost ready but will age well.  Juicy a real potent expression of Nebbiolo. Such terrific limestone length, a little salty, tannins emerge n the finish, very authentic example. 90pts

2017 Oreste Stefano Barolo Perno 15%
25-30 days in ss, off the lees, Malo, after Malo passes the winter to deposit tartrate, 12 months in concrete, 18 mess in 2500liters

Very floral, rather sweet, very candied on the nose, very sweet tobacco, with a gentle underlay of sweet baking spices and a light dusty of dry soil. Very fresh, well good tension, finely etched in the mouth, tannins are a bit crude, another sign of the vintage but this has the texture and energy of a cooler vintage, lots of sour cherry almost black cherry fruit. Really very fresh with great length, lots of wild herb, licorice, wild mint and balsamic according to Clemente.  Its not my type of nose, but the quality here is undeniable. Really has a ton of wild herb character in the mouth and on the nose. It is a good intro Barolo with a lot of intense flavor and sort of classic character. 91pts

2017 Oreste Stefano Barolo Perno Riserva
The top of the vineyard
Tonneaux, two tonneau of 500

A less fruity expression on the nose, still retaining a bit of sweetness of the year but much more nuanced with the herbal component being perhaps less fresh but a greater part of the spectrum.  Dark fruited, a hint of black olive, black currant accent, candied but not in an overtly sweet way.  Broader, might have even more acidity here, tannins are more polished if still a touch dry, elegant, a very different expression of Nebbiolo, long, supple finish, much more seductive, gently releases rose petal notes on the nose, incipient notes emerging of tobacco, hickory before the fruit rather faceted if dark, and fresh on the finish. A more elegant, nuanced wine, already pretty ready. Still has chewy, spiky tannins. It is long and very finely balanced while the nose shows some 2017 this is even less impacted by the vintage in the mouth with only the tannins showing notes of the warm vintage. 92pts

2018 Oreste Stefano Barolo Perno
Truffle, olive, fresh crushed fruit, just gorgeous fruit, fresh, just lovely and fruit forward with a purity and detail of fruit that is almost unheard of in 2018. Effortless elegance, almost silky, transparent with plenty of tart and ripe red fruit a little strawberry to the cherry, great depth, lovely ripeness to the tannins, long, its not the most complex but its terrific, just bursting with fruit with hints of cut grass and fresh herb top notes in the mouth and a hint of bitter citrus fruits, give this 3-5 years and it should be terrific even if its good to go today. 92pts

2019 Oreste Stefano Barolo Perno
Black cherry, earth, sandalwood, very deep with nuanced and transparent spicy herbal accents. Round, generous, plump and powerful, ripe tannins, broad, clean finish very limestone driven, salty, not as bright as some of the other wines, well balanced if a little flat, more depth than height, it’s not extracted but certainly powerful. Its short and compact. Lets hope time is helpful, there does emerge on the finale a bit of acidity and a nice return of black cherry skin fruit, but the balance is very fine, it is fresh, enough, and a very good expression of the vintage, gaining length already, a wine of potential, it requires your attention. Lovely tannin ripeness and sense of limestone. 92pts
